My colleagues at the Sun, Star, Globe, Canadian Press and Hamilton Spectator weren’t too far ahead of the typewriter era when I started. We began with an early crude computer called a Teleram that weighed a ton and transmitted painfully slowly on a tiny screen. It had sensitive acoustic phone couplers that always disconnected if there was loud crowd noise, which was usually a late goal on deadline. But before the Gardens closed, we were all using laptops that sent stories with the click of a mouse.

After the Gardens closed, the club provided a unique souvenir for all media, a monogrammed container of melted ice from the last game and a slice of the Formica press box table with our assigned number, autographed by Wendel Clark. —L.H.
